Before we get to the recipe, let’s take a moment to discuss the key ingredients – milk and bourbon. Milk adds a creamy richness and bourbon adds warmth and depth to our holiday libation. • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • splash vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • Ice cubes
  • Cinnamon sticks and additional nutmeg for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Add ice to a cocktail shaker. Pour in the milk, cream, bourbon, simple syrup, and vanilla extract. Shake for 30 seconds. Pour into two glasses.
  2. Grate a little nutmeg on top for a festive touch and add a cinnamon stick as a swirly garnish. Presentation is key, especially during the holidays!

What kind of milk do you use for milk punch?

Whole milk or heavy cream is typically used for making traditional milk punch. They provide a rich and creamy texture to the drink, contributing to its luscious and smooth consistency. The fat content in whole milk or heavy cream adds a luxurious mouthfeel to the punch.

I particularly love Alta Dena brand milk because it comes from SoCal family farmers has been around since 1945. They have grown quite a bit since then, but are still a farmer-owned brand committed to the highest standards.

As you know, I’m a huge proponent of buying and sourcing my food from California farms. DYK that 99% of California dairies are family-owned? Buying Alta Dena milk is not only a way we can support local farming families, but it means that the milk is super fresh. In fact, most milk makes it from the farm to the market in less than 48 hours.

Since my celiac diagnosis (and subsequent diagnosis with osteoporosis) over a decade ago, I have been very conscientious about finding ways to add more calcium and vitamin D to my diet. Milk, and dairy products in general, are a very easy (and delicious) way to do that. Milk has 13 essential nutrients including vitamins A and D, zinc, selenium, and protein. It’s beneficial for kids and adults alike. I add milk to my coffee, use it in my gluten-free baked goods, and, of course, add it to some cocktails like this bourbon milk punch recipe!

What is a milk punch made of?

Milk punch is a delightful and creamy beverage with variations, but the basic ingredients typically include:

  1. Milk or Cream: The base of the drink, providing a rich and creamy texture. Some recipes use whole milk, while others incorporate heavy cream or a combination of both.
  2. Spirit: Bourbon is a popular choice, but other spirits like brandy or rum can be used as well. Bourbon, with its distinct flavor profile, is often preferred for its warm and robust notes.
  3. Sweetener: Powdered sugar or simple syrup is commonly used to add sweetness to the punch. The amount can be adjusted to suit personal taste preferences.
  4. Flavorings: Vanilla extract and freshly grated nutmeg are common flavorings that contribute to the drink’s complexity and depth of taste. These ingredients enhance the overall festive feel of the punch.
  5. Ice: Ice cubes are used to chill the drink and provide a refreshing element. Some recipes may also suggest serving the milk punch over crushed ice.

Optional ingredients or variations might include egg whites for a frothier texture, additional spices like cinnamon, and garnishes such as cinnamon sticks or grated nutmeg on top.

The beauty of any milk punch recipe lies in its versatility, allowing you to adjust the ratios and ingredients to create a personalized version that suits your taste preferences and the occasion.
