The Magic of Moon Milk

Moon milk, an Ayurvedic remedy for sleeplessness, typically combines warm milk with herbs and spices to promote relaxation. However, as we embrace modern variations, this iced version offers a refreshing take on the ancient elixir, incorporating the calming properties of lavender and the antioxidant benefits of blueberries, making it a healthful, soul-soothing beverage.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of fresh blueberries
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 11/2 tablespoons of dried culinary lavender, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups of milk (any variety of Real California Milk to suit dietary preferences, but it tastes best with whole milk IMO)
  • Ice cubes, for serving
  • Optional garnishes: a sprig of lavender or a few blueberries

Preparation:

  1. Infuse the Lavender: Begin by gently simmering the milk in a small saucepan. Add one tablespoon of the dried lavender to the milk, stirring gently to ensure it is fully immersed. Allow the mixture to simmer lightly for about 5 minutes, then remove from heat. Let it steep for another 10 minutes to imbue the milk with the floral essence of lavender.
  2. Place the blueberries, honey, two tablespoons of water, and remaining lavender in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently until the blueberries burst and the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth and strain through a fine sieve to remove the solid bits and cool.
  3. Strain the lavender-infused milk to remove all the lavender blossoms. Let the milk cool to room temperature. Once cooled, divide the milk into two glasses and add about 1-2 tablespoons of the blueberry syrup. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Fill glasses with ice and garnish with few blueberries blueberries for an extra touch of elegance.

The flavor profile of this iced lavender blueberry moon milk is as enchanting as its name suggests. The floral notes of lavender blend beautifully with the sweet and tart blueberries. 1. Rich in Nutrients: California milk is a good source of thirteen essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D, and potassium. These nutrients are crucial for building and maintaining strong bones, teeth, and ensuring proper muscle function.
  2. Protein Content: Milk is a great source of high-quality protein, which is vital for muscle repair, growth, and overall bodily functions. This makes it particularly beneficial for children, athletes, and those recovering from illnesses.
  3. Vitamin Rich: Besides being fortified with vitamin D, milk naturally contains many B vitamins (like riboflavin, B12), which are important for energy production and maintaining healthy red blood cells and nerves. It also provides vitamins A and K.
  4. Heart Health: Despite past concerns over dairy fat, more recent research suggests that dairy consumption might be linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. California milk, especially if it’s low-fat or non-fat, can be a heart-healthy addition to your diet.
  5. Immune Support: Some components in milk have been found to support the immune system. For instance, lactoferrin, a protein found in cow’s milk, has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  6. Mood Regulation: There is some evidence to suggest that vitamin D and calcium, both found in milk, may help in managing mood fluctuations and supporting overall mental health.

Does this moon milk recipe really help you sleep?

Moon milk, which is rooted in Ayurvedic traditions, is often touted for its potential to aid sleep. The concept traditionally involves drinking warm milk infused with herbs and spices that are believed to have calming properties. The idea is that these ingredients can help to relax the mind and body, potentially leading to better sleep. Here are a few points on how moon milk might help with sleep:

  1. Milk: Milk has long been a home remedy for sleeplessness. It contains tryptophan, an amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin and melatonin, which are important for regulating sleep.
  2. Herbal Additions: Moon milk recipes often include herbs like ashwagandha, turmeric, nutmeg, or lavender, many of which have been used in herbal medicine to reduce stress and anxiety or promote relaxation. For example, lavender is widely recognized for its calming effects.
  3. Blueberries: Research indicates that blueberries are abundant in antioxidants and have beneficial effects on memory, sleep quality, and mood. They are also a significant source of melatonin, the hormone that aids in sleep. Since the body metabolizes melatonin rapidly, blueberries are an ideal option for individuals experiencing insomnia.

While there is anecdotal evidence supporting the sleep-promoting benefits of moon milk, scientific research on moon milk itself is limited. So while moon milk might help some people relax and prepare for sleep due to its combination of milk, calming herbs, and the ritual of preparing and drinking a soothing beverage, its effectiveness can vary from person to person. If sleep issues persist, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider.

How often should you drink moon milk?

Moon milk can be enjoyed as part of your nightly routine or just occasionally, depending on your preferences and needs. There isn’t a strict guideline on how often you should drink moon milk, as it’s generally safe for most people when consumed in moderation.

Are golden milk and moon milk the same?

Golden milk and moon milk are similar in that they are both milk-based beverages infused with herbs and spices, and they share a tradition of being used for their health benefits. However, they have different ingredient focuses and cultural origins, which set them apart:

  1. Golden Milk: Often referred to as “turmeric milk,” golden milk is primarily made with turmeric, which gives it its characteristic golden color.
  2. Moon Milk: This is also an Ayurvedic drink but is specifically tailored for promoting relaxation and better sleep. Moon milk can be made with a variety of herbs and spices, depending on the desired effects. Common ingredients include ashwagandha (an adaptogen known for its stress-reducing properties), nutmeg (which is considered a natural sleep aid), and lavender (known for its calming effects).

Both beverages can be part of a healthy routine, enjoyed for their unique flavors and benefits. You can choose between them based on your specific health goals or simply on which flavors you prefer.
